Preparations...

... travelling over the last couple of years to Japan, India, China etc. made me realize that for proper trips, I need a proper camera, so I will be able to capture my experiences properly. So one part of my preparations was to get myself a Digital SLR camera (Canon EOS 550D with a 18-135 mm lense).
I knew having a DSLR is one thing - actually using it properly is another So I joined a starter (how to use my DSLR) course today and enclosed the best of my first shots (no I don't know the ppl on the pictures - they were "classmates" from the photo-course)

... da ich bisher nie mit meinen Reisebildern so richtig zufrieden war und ich unbedingt meine Zeit mit schönen Bildern dokumentieren wollte - war einer meiner Vorbereitungseinkäufe eine digitale Spiegelrefelex Kamera (Canon EOS 550D mit einem 18-135mm Objektiv). Jetzt ist es eine Sache eine Kamera zu kaufen, eine andere sie zu benutzen, also hab ich heute erstmal einen Photokurs besucht. Anbei meine ersten Versuche (nein ich kenne die Personen nicht)

The plan for the next 9+ months

English:

After quite some research, applications and interviews I have now found 2 meaningful volunteer projects which I will be taking on over the next couple of months:

- Working in an orphanage (see picture) in Ecuador and helping Kids with their school-homework, teach them basic Math and English; helping out in the administration as well as spending time in general with the kids as I will be living with them directly.

- Teaching English in a Primary School in North-East Cambodia (yes I know you guys are now imagining Cambodian Primary School Kids speaking English with a German accent) but considering that the school of 1500 kids has only 1 English teacher and overall not even 50 teachers, they can use every helping hand there is

So the basic plan for the next couple of months seems to be set:
- Spend time at home with my family and friends during July (as well as learn basic Spanish)
- Work in Ecuador from August till end of October
- Travel in South-America until Christmas
- Spend Christmas at home with family and friends
- Go off to Cambodia in January to teach English

and after that we will see - there are still loads of places on my "wish travel list" (e.g. Vietnam and Thailand, Australia and New Zealand as well as the US with Alaska).

Nach langer Suche und vielen Bewerbungen habe ich nun für die nächsten Monate zwei gute ehrenamtliche Projekte gefunden:

- Aushelfen in einem Waisenhaus (Bilder) in Ecuador, hauptsächlich den Kindern bei Ihren Hausaufgaben unterstützen, sowie Mathe und Englisch unterrichten, in der Administration aushelfen und da ich mit den Kindern auch zusammen leben werde einfach mit ihnen Zeit verbringen.
- Englisch Lehrer im Nord-Osten Kambodschas. Dort werde ich einer von zwei Englisch Lehrern an einer Grundschule mit 1500 Kindern sein - die Schule ansich hat weniger als 50 Lehrer, das sollte interessant werden

Somit steht der Plan für die pächsten Monate im Prinzip schon mal fest:
- Im Juli werde ich Zeit zu Hause mit meiner Familie und meinen Freunden verbringen (und auch Spanisch lernen :-))
- Dann von August bis Ende Oktober in Ecuador aushelfen
- Danach bis Weihnachten in Süd-Amerika verreisen
- An Weihnachten nach Hause um Zeit mit Familie und Freunden zu verbringen
- Im Januar 2012 bis Ende März in Kambodscha Englisch unterrichten

und was danach kommt werden wir sehen. Ich hab noch viele Länder auf meiner Reiseliste - z.B. Vietnam, Thailand, Australien, Neu Seeland und die USA mit Alaska.

Finding volunteering work is not that easy after all....

Over the last 5 months I have tried to find two meaningful charity projects around the world in which I could have worked for 3 months. Looking back finding one wasn't easy at all - in fact I would say I could have easier have found a new paid job than a meaningful volunteer job. This has mainly to do with following facts:

- In the days of the global crisis, unemployed professionals have swamped charities with applications to bridge their time with meaningful work.
- Graduates of the charity sector (e.g. foreign development or politics) are willing to start off their career with unpaid internships to get a foot into Non Profit Organisations to further down the road receive a full job. And they are so much more qualified with having experiences such as living in developing countries etc.
- After all as a IT Project manager I am not particularly qualified for volunteering work

So over the last months I definitely had to adjust my expectations of charities welcoming me with open arms as I was willing to work for free and thought I was qualified.

In den letzten 5 Monaten habe ich mich intensiv darum bemüht für jeweils zweimal 3 Monate eine sinnvolle ehrenamtliche Arbeit zu finden. Was sich im Nachhinein nicht wirklich als leicht herausgestellt hat - ich würde sogar behaupten, es wäre mir leichter gefallen einen neuen Job zu finden als gute ehrenamtliche Arbeit, das hat hauptsächlich folgende Gründe:

- Wohltätigkeitsorganisationen sind völlig überflutet mit Bewerbungen für freiwillige Arbeit aufgrund der schlechten globalen Wirtschaftslage - jeder scheint die Zeit ohne Arbeit mit ehrenamtlicher Arbeit zu überbrücken.
- Viele Studenten in dieser Branche machen kostenlose Praktikas und sind um einiges besser qualifiziert (z.B. haben schon Auslandsaufenthalte in Entwicklungsländern vorzuweisen)
- Wirklich qualifiziert für ehrenamtliche Arbeit bin ich nicht als IT Projekt Manager der "nur" Englisch spricht.

Das heißt ich musste erstmal meine Vorstellung zurecht rücken, dass ich als kostenloste und qualifizierte Arbeitskraft mit offenen Armen von Wohltätigkeitsorganisationen empfangen werde.
